I spent a few weeks in Cambodia and personally loved it. Of course, poverty is apparent throughout the country. However, with the top things to do in Cambodia, you’ll have a great time regardless.
I came to Siem Reap on a bus from Thailand and traveled from there, so if you’re planning to visit Asia, Cambodia is easily reachable by air or bus.

Before going through all the best attractions in Cambodia, let’s answer some questions from first-timers that may help you too when visiting.
How to Get to Cambodia?
There are three main airports in Cambodia: Phnom Penh (PNH), Siem Reap (REP), and Sihanouk International Airport (KOS). From there, you’ll be able to visit every part of the country and the best things to do in Cambodia. Fly to Phnom Penh to visit Cambodia’s capital, to Siem Reap to visit the amazing Angkor Wat, and to Sihanouk to explore a different side of the country.
In addition, you might want to fly to bigger hubs like Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Singapore and catch a flight to Cambodia from there, as it will most likely end up being cheaper.
Also, there are many buses coming from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, and you can catch one of them for a few dollars. Of course, it isn’t as convenient as flying, but it is definitely a nice experience and you’ll see the stunning countryside on the road.
Note that tourists in Cambodia use US Dollars. In fact, while Cambodia has its own currency, it is generally not used by visitors.

The best ways to get around Cambodia is to fly internally or take a bus between cities. Internal flights are relatively inexpensive, which is a bonus.

Discover the Temples of Angkor Wat
If you looked up the Cambodian flag before your trip, you’ve already seen Angkor Wat. A grand temple complex right next to the city of Siem Reap.
Also called the Angkor Archaeological Park, this is the largest religious monument in the world, created as a spiritual home for the god Vishnu, intricately constructed in a prime example of ancient architecture.
Angkor Wat should be on top of your list of things to do in Cambodia. Visit the temples, especially Angkor Thom, go around with your tuk tuk, and see the monks praying and chanting.
You’re free to wander through the temples of the ancient Khmer Empire, taking in the wall galleries telling of Cambodian myths and legends. Don’t miss the magical sunrise and the sunset as it will be one of the most unique things to do in Cambodia and is certainly a great experience in Southeast Asia.
It’s worth noting that you need a taxi to visit Angkor Wat, as the site is massive, and you have different tours you can join to get around – 1-day tours with sunrise, 2-day tours, and 3-day tours.
I personally got the 3-day tour and it was just enough to see the major temples and some smaller ones, so if you have enough time, I recommend buying this one.

Another great show to see after a day around Angkor Wat is the Apsara Dance Performance.

When in Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are absolute must-sees. This stunning complex, with its classic roofs and golden facade, is not only a feast for the eyes but also a window into the royal history of Cambodia.

One amazing activity while in Phnom Penh is taking a half-day bike tour to Silk Island for an adventure off the beaten path.
This tour is a fantastic way to see a different side of Cambodia, away from the usual tourist trails. You’ll cycle through rural landscapes and small villages, witnessing the traditional way of life of the local people.
The highlight is seeing the silk-weaving communities, where artisans create stunning fabrics using age-old techniques. It’s a great opportunity to learn about local crafts and maybe even pick up a unique souvenir.

Sampling Khmer cuisine is a must for any food enthusiast visiting the country, and while it may not look appealing at first sight, it’s actually really good.
Cambodian food is known for its fresh ingredients, subtle flavors, and unique combinations.
Indulge in classic dishes like Fish Amok (a fragrant curry), Beef Lok Lak, and the ever-popular Khmer BBQ. Street food markets are a great place to start, offering an array of dishes to suit all taste buds.

A trip to Cambodia isn’t complete without exploring its stunning islands, each offering its own slice of paradise. But there are a few I recommend visiting, all unique and beautiful in their own way.
Koh Rong, known for its pristine white beaches and crystal-clear waters, is perfect for snorkeling, diving, or just lounging on the sand.
Its smaller sister island, Koh Rong Samloem, provides a more tranquil escape with less development and serene beaches like Saracen Bay. For a more rustic and authentic island experience, head to Koh Ta Kiev, where you can enjoy untouched nature and basic, yet charming, bungalows.
Another gem is Koh Thmei, part of Ream National Park, offering rich biodiversity and a chance to spot exotic wildlife. It’s less touristy, making it ideal for those seeking peace and quiet.

Truth be told, I couldn’t pick one single island to add to this list of things to do in Cambodia, so it all depends on your itinerary!

That being said, it’s still a place to spend the day at, exploring the local markets, sample fresh seafood, and relax on one of its urban beaches.
After a day, I recommend taking the boat to the nearby island Koh Rong Samloem, which I’ll cover here below.
A day in Sihanoukville is enough to get a taste of its charm before you head off to the more serene and picturesque islands nearby.

Just a 45-minute ferry ride from Sihanoukville, Koh Rong Samloem is an idyllic island paradise.
With its crystal-clear waters, powdery white sand beaches, and a beautiful setting that’s perfect for a holiday in Southeast Asia.
I recommend spending 2-3 days here to fully embrace the island’s serene beauty.
Whether you’re snorkeling in its vibrant coral reefs, swinging in a hammock, or enjoying a beachfront BBQ, Koh Rong Samloem is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature at its best.
