Sun and Heat Protection Essentials for a Trip to Krabi

Nestled on the southwestern coast of Thailand, Krabi is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning limestone cliffs, azure waters, and vibrant marine life.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, Krabi offers an array of activities to suit every traveller. From exploring the famous Phi Phi Islands, lounging on Railay Beach, or kayaking through the mangrove forests of Ao Thalane, Krabi promises an unforgettable experience.

However, before you embark on your journey to this sun-soaked haven, make sure to prepare for the intense sun and heat that characterises the climate of this beautiful region.

The Best Time to Visit Krabi for Sunny Weather

As a whole, Thailand enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it’s warm year-round. We recommend booking a holiday to Krabi during the dry season, from November to March, when temperatures are comfortable and rainfall is minimal.

On average, expect about 9 hours of sunshine per day, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 35°C, perfect for beach activities and island-hopping tours.

However, it’s essential to note that the UV index remains high even in these ideal months, averaging a rating between 11 and 12. This means that adequate sun protection should be an essential part of your packing list.

Sun and Heat Protection Items to Pack

Sunscreen

The tropical sun in Krabi province can be extremely harsh. Prolonged exposure without protection can lead to severe sunburns, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer. In fact, if UV readings are 11 or higher, extreme sunburn can occur in less than 10 minutes. So, for those with plans to snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Koh Poda or hike up to the Tiger Cave Temple, sunscreen is a must.

Cancer Research UK advises applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and 4 or 5 stars. The stars on a tube of sunscreen denote how well it protects against the sun’s UVA rays.

Meanwhile, SPF ratings tell you how long you can spend in the sun without getting sunburnt from UVB rays. To stay safe under Krabi’s sun, we recommend Coola Classic Sunscreen Spray with SPF 50. It’s non-sticky, reef-friendly, and easy to reapply every two hours.

Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays is crucial to prevent damage such as photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye) and cataracts. In Krabi, the sun poses an even bigger threat, as the reflections off of water and sand can magnify its effects. The best way to avoid eye damage is by wearing sunglasses that provide adequate UV protection.

For a stylish pair to wear as you lounge on Ao Nang Beach and other outdoor areas, check out Ray-Ban’s array of regular and prescription sunglasses. All of their models come with 100% UV protection, as well as handy travelling cases and cleaning cloths to make maintaining your sunglasses easier on your holiday.

This includes the bestselling Original Wayfarer Classic, which you can customise according to your prescription for clear vision and maximum sun protection.

UPF Clothing

While sunscreen gives you a layer of defence against the sun, UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) clothing is the most effective form of sun protection for your body. Think of it as a wearable SPF that you never have to reapply, ideal for all-day excursions like visiting the Emerald Pool or trekking through Thung Teao Forest Natural Park.

Experts suggest opting for UPF clothing with a rating of 50, which blocks 98% of the sun’s rays. Consider packing tops like Solbari’s Everyday Performance Sun Shirt with UPF50+. This comes in men’s and women’s sizes and uses eco-conscious recycled performance fabric that is breathable, lightweight, and quick-drying.
