How to Get to Treblinka From Warsaw in 2024

Treblinka is a place that should not exist. It was the site of one of the largest death camps in Nazi-occupied Poland, where a large number of people, mostly Polish Jews, lost their lives during the Holocaust. Yet today its location remains unknown to many people and is often replaced by day trips to Auschwitz.

Getting to Treblinka from Warsaw isn’t complicated and there are several options available.

Treblinka camp was the site of two Nazi camps: the Extermination Camp and the Penal Labour Camp. The area of the old camp has been turned into a memorial with a small museum.

Best Months to Visit Poland

Poland is a beautiful country with many interesting points of interest. If you are looking to explore the countryside, the wintertime is probably not the best time to go.

The best time to visit Poland and Treblinka is from March through May during Spring and from September through November during fall. In addition, I recommend packing your umbrellas because it will most likely rain at some point during the day.

How Far is Warsaw to Treblinka?

Warsaw and Treblinka are 84 km away from one another. However, there is a 103.3 km road distance between both due to detours, potential traffic jams, and other obstacles. While Warsaw isn’t prone to many traffic jams, you might lose your way here and there as a tourist.

What to Do in Treblinka

Getting to Treblinka from Warsaw isn’t difficult, but experiencing and taking in the experience here isn’t easy.

Sure, you may have joined a day trip to Auschwitz previously. But Treblinka was a major concentration camp, and you just can’t get used to the feeling. Treblinka I was originally a forced labor camp set up in 1941 before it became a death camp the following year.

The site also includes the Treblinka I Penal Labour Camp, which covers an area of 34 hectares and provides historical context about the camp’s significance in WWII history.

There aren’t many things to do in Treblinka and, in fact, the only interesting sites are the Treblinka Museum and the concentration camp.

Visit the Treblinka Museum

Visiting the Treblinka Museum is an important way to learn and understand this tragic history. But be sure to consider how much time you can allocate for visiting.

The first option only includes a one-hour tour of the exhibit in the museum building. On the other hand, if you dare to see the most dramatic parts, and if you have more time, I recommend visiting the entire place.

When staying two or three hours, you’ll go walk through some of these historical sites outside including the extermination camp, the labor camp, and the memorial.

The entrance fee to the museum is free but there’s a fee of 7PLN/$1.80 for toilets and parking. It’s open daily Monday to Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. That said, the museum is free on Mondays.

Can I Visit Treblinka Museum?

Absolutely. Treblinka Museum is open to the public and will take anything between 1 to 3 hours. The duration depends on whether you decide to see the concentration camp and memorial or just stay in the building museum.

See Treblinka I

Visiting the Treblinka death camp, specifically Treblinka I, is one of the most somber and eye-opening experiences you may have in your entire life. The tour guide will tell you about the gas chambers, the ovens, and the atrocities that were committed there.

It was heart-wrenching to see first-hand where so many innocent people were slaughtered. While it is an eye-opening trip from Warsaw, you’ll want to get mentally prepared first.

Visit Treblinka II

Treblinka II Extermination Camp, a World War II concentration camp, is responsible for the extermination of over 800,000 Jews. Though it is now largely abandoned, Treblinka II Extermination Camp remains a sobering reminder of one of history’s darkest chapters.

You can walk through the derelict buildings and see the graves of so many people that were killed.
