For those interested in staying close to the action, there are plenty of museums, galleries and historical sights to check out in the city center. The Vieux Port (Old Port) is always a popular spot for tourists, as is the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde which offers stunning views over the city. Other top sights include the Palais Longchamp, MUCEM and Le Panier – the oldest district in Marseille.
Personally, I think the best way to explore Marseille and its landmarks is to jump on a Hop On Hop Off bus, a touristic bus that goes pretty much everywhere in downtown Marseille and around, which is a great and cheap way to get around.
Foodies will also be in their element in Marseille, with a huge range of restaurants serving up delicious local specialties such as bouillabaisse, daube and navettes. Be sure to try some of the city’s famous seafood while you’re here and its excellent selection of wines.
There are plenty of options for those wanting to get out and explore the surrounding area. Just a short drive from Marseille is Cassis – a beautiful coastal town known for its picturesque harbor and colorful houses. That’s not it; Nature lovers will also enjoy a visit to the Calanques National Park, where they can hike through the stunning limestone cliffs and take in the breathtaking views.
