10 of the Best Cities to Visit in France

France is a traveler’s dream. With its stunning countryside, world-renowned food and wine, and countless historical landmarks, it’s no wonder the country is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

But how do you choose which cities to visit? Here are the top 10 cities in France.

Strasbourg (Best City in France for its Authenticity)

A world away from Paris, Strasbourg sits on the French and German border and has a turbulent history, having changed hands between the two countries numerous times over the last few centuries. Very much French today, Strasbourg is one of the best places to visit in France.

If you’re looking for things to do in Strasbourg for a few days, you won’t be disappointed. This charming city has plenty to offer, from its well-preserved old town to its many museums and galleries. Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw from some of the most beautiful countryside in France. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Visit the Strasbourg Cathedral: This Gothic masterpiece is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city, and it’s well worth a visit. Climb to the top of the tower for stunning views over Strasbourg and the surrounding area.

Explore the old town: Strasbourg’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s easy to see why. Stroll through the quaint streets and take in the beautiful architecture. Be sure to visit Place Kleber, the city’s main square, and Rue des Orfevres, home to many of Strasbourg’s most famous shops and restaurants.

Visit a museum: Strasbourg is home to many excellent museums, including the Alsace Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the Strasbourg History Museum.

Take a boat trip: The city is located on the River Rhine, so what better way to see the city than from the water? There are plenty of boat tours to choose from, ranging from short sightseeing trips to longer cruises.

Head into the countryside: Strasbourg is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countrysides in France. Take a day trip to one of the nearby wine regions, such as Alsace or the Black Forest, or go for a hike in the Vosges Mountains.

Of course, there is so much more to do in Strasbourg, like visiting one of the best Christmas markets in France, and you can only scratch the surface when staying here for a few days. For this reason, I recommend taking a day trip to Strasbourg to enjoy everything it has to offer when your time in the city is limited.

Monaco

Monaco is the playground of the rich and famous – Home to casinos, Michelin star restaurants, and some of the world’s most luxurious hotels. And you guessed it – it’s one of the best cities in France (Monaco is a country, but it borders with France).

Celebrities and sports stars call the city home, including many Formula One drivers, who descend on the city in May to race around the iconic streets.

The best place to visit is the city’s marina, where some of the world’s most exclusive superyachts are docked at any time of the year. Or you can walk around the F1 circuit, providing they aren’t using it for racing that weekend!

Any visitor to the south of France simply must take a day trip to Monaco and there’s plenty to keep you busy. Here are some ideas of things to do:

Visit the Prince’s Palace: This imposing palace is the home of the Prince of Monaco. It’s open to the public, so take advantage and explore the lavishly decorated rooms and grounds.

Wander around old town: Monaco’s old town is compact but crammed full of charm. Wander the narrow streets, pop into the cafes and boutiques, and check out the views from the Prince’s Palace gardens.

Visit the Oceanographic Museum: This museum is devoted to all things marine and is well worth a visit whether you’re a keen scuba diver or just interested in learning more about life beneath the waves.

Head to Monte Carlo: Monte Carlo is famous for its luxury hotels and casinos, but even if gambling isn’t your thing, it’s still worth checking out this glitzy part of town. Take a stroll along the waterfront to people-watch and admire the yachts moored up.

Visit Princess Grace Japanese Garden: This serene garden is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Monaco. Stroll around the peaceful grounds, taking in the tranquil ponds and bonsai trees.

These are just a few ideas of what to do in Monaco if you’re staying for a few days. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg – there’s plenty more to see and do in this tiny Principality. Just get out there and explore!

Marseille

Right next is Marseille, the 2nd largest city in France which offers many different options available to spend a few days and more.

While some may prefer to stick close to the city center and enjoy all the activities in Marseille in terms of history, culture and cuisine, others may want to venture further afield and explore the beautiful coastline that surrounds the city.

For those interested in staying close to the action, there are plenty of museums, galleries and historical sights to check out in the city center. The Vieux Port (Old Port) is always a popular spot for tourists, as is the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde which offers stunning views over the city.

Other top sights include the Palais Longchamp, MUCEM and Le Panier – the oldest district in Marseille.

Personally, I think the best way to explore Marseille and its landmarks is to jump on a Hop On Hop Off bus, a touristic bus that goes pretty much everywhere in downtown Marseille and around, which is a great and cheap way to get around.

Foodies will also be in their element in Marseille, with a huge range of restaurants serving up delicious local specialties such as bouillabaisse, daube and navettes. Be sure to try some of the city’s famous seafood while you’re here and its excellent selection of wines.

There are plenty of options for those wanting to get out and explore the surrounding area. Just a short drive from Marseille is Cassis – a beautiful coastal town known for its picturesque harbor and colorful houses. That’s not it; Nature lovers will also enjoy a visit to the Calanques National Park, where they can hike through the stunning limestone cliffs and take in the breathtaking views.

Nice (Best City in France to Enjoy the Beach)

Only a couple of hours away from Marseille is Nice, a beach city with incredible, authentic architecture, stunning beach, and, of course, its French Riviera that you can’t miss. Let me elaborate on the most unique things that Nice has to offer here below:

  • Take a stroll through Old Town and the Promenade des Anglais

Nice’s Old Town is a labyrinth of medieval streets and alleyways, lined with colorful houses and boutique shops. Start at Place Massena, the central square, and wander through the narrow streets until you find yourself in one of the many picturesque squares. Be sure to stop by the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and the Chapel of the Penitents Blancs while you’re in Old Town.

Stop at the Promenade des Anglais to end your walking trip around Nice. This iconic promenade stretches for over 7 kilometers along the Mediterranean Sea, and is lined with hotels, restaurants, and cafes. If you’re feeling energetic, you can rent a bicycle and cycle the entire length of the promenade.

  • See Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Villefranche-sur-Mer from a Boat

Nice offers a chance to see Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Villefranche-sur-Mer from the water. There are a variety of boat tours available, ranging from sightseeing trips to full-day excursions. I recommend the former, as you don’t need to whole day on the water to take amazing photos. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is a small peninsula home to luxurious villas and pristine beaches. Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the other hand, is a charming fishing village with a colorful harbor. Both destinations are well worth a visit, and a boat tour is the best way to see them.

  • Visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence

When planning a trip to Nice, France, an excursion to Saint-Paul-de-Vence must be included in the itinerary. This medieval hilltop village is breathtakingly picturesque, with stunning views of the Mediterranean and alpine peaks.

The narrow cobblestone streets are adorned with charming art galleries, engaging cafes and delightful boutiques, giving visitors an immersive cultural experience. Lying close by is the renowned Fondation Maeght museum and garden complex; marvel at thought-provoking contemporary art created by some of the world’s most significant living artists.

This historic site was once the location of a fortress built by the Counts of Provence, and today it is home to a number of museums and art galleries. Be sure to visit the Ruins of the ramparts for some incredible views.

  • Shop at the Cours Saleya Market

If you’re in Nice on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, be sure to head to the Cours Saleya Market. This vibrant market sells everything from fresh produce to flowers, and is the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs. When you’re done shopping, stop for a bite to eat at one of the many cafes and restaurants that line the market square.

  • Taste the Delicious Wine at St Paul de Vence

Looking for a delicious way to spend an afternoon? Then head to St Paul de Vence, where you can enjoy some of the best wine in the area. Located just outside of Nice, this charming village is home to a number of family-run wineries that produce high-quality wines. Take a tour of one of the vineyards, and learn about the wine-making process while sampling some of the best bottles!
