Seville, 260km from Granada, is accessible in about 3 hours by car, bus, or train. This vibrant city, rich in history and culture, is a must-visit for a day trip or even longer if time allows.

Start your visit at the iconic Seville Cathedral and the Giralda Tower, offering panoramic views of the city. Explore the Real Alcázar, a stunning example of Mudéjar architecture, and wander through the historic Santa Cruz district.

Don’t miss the Plaza de España, with its impressive architecture and canal. Seville is also famous for its lively tapas bars, so make sure to indulge in some local delicacies while you’re at it!

I suggest coming to Seville in the evening and spending the night here for a full day of exploration and coming back the day after. Alternatively, take the train at 6.25 AM from Granada (€47.20 per person, one way), and you’ll get there at 9.00 AM, which is good enough.

The last train leaves at 7.20 PM and get to Granada around 10 PM and the price is €47.20 per person, one way, so you’ll have just about 10 hours in town.

Alternatively, the first bus leaves from Granada station at 7.00 AM and gets to Seville at 10.00 AM and the trip costs €26.07 per person.

Also, the attractions in Seville, specifically the cathedral, always fill up quickly, and you’ll want to get your tickets as soon as possible.

Lastly, while I personally recommend spending 2 full days in Seville or more if possible, you still get to see the main spots in one day, and that makes a great day trip from Granada.

Malaga

Malaga, just 140km and about 1.5 hours from Granada by car, bus, or train, offers a perfect blend of beach and culture. In this enchanting coastal city, you can start with the Picasso Museum, where you can admire works by the city’s most famous son.

Stroll around the historic Alcazaba fortress for a glimpse into Malaga’s Moorish past, and don’t forget to climb up to Gibralfaro Castle for stunning city views.

The Malaga Cathedral in the city center is a masterpiece worth visiting and you can get to its rooftop for incredible city views, and for a relaxing end to your day, head to La Malagueta beach.

Malaga’s historic center is also great for enjoying local cuisine and shopping. Just like Seville, a day is enough to hit the highlights, but an overnight stay and spending 2 days in Malaga lets you explore the city without feeling rushed.

You can get there in the morning by car, by train, or with the bus. The first train leaves at 7.36 AM and gets to Malaga at 9 AM for only €23.10 per person. The last train leaves from Malaga to Granada at 8.20 PM and you’ll be back at 9.37PM, for the same price.

So you can easily plan 12 hours in Malaga, making it one of the day trips from Granada to consider, and you’ll get to see all the main attractions in town.

Caminito Del Rey

Located 140km from Granada, Caminito Del Rey is about 2 hours away by car or train. This once-dangerous walkway has been safely renovated, offering breathtaking views of the gorge.

Here, you’ll get to walk along the suspended pathways, providing a thrilling experience with stunning natural scenery. The area is also great for bird watching and spotting local wildlife.

Plan for about 2-3 hours for the walk itself, with travel time making it a full day trip. Note that tickets must be booked in advance due to limited daily access.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring water – Personally wore Converse shoes, which were comfortable enough. Visiting early in the morning or late afternoon can help avoid the crowds, and that is a bonus especially in the summertime.

Now, while going from Granada to Caminito del Rey is possible by train, it’s quite inconvenient, and I recommend going by car or taking a tour from Malaga, as it’s much more comfortable and convenient.

The first train leaves from Granada at 6.56 AM and you’ll be in El Chorro, near the hike, at 9.22 AM, with 1 change in Malaga Station. The one-way ticket costs €27.50 per person. The itinerary to come back to Granada is the same and you’ll have a few trains each afternoon.

Mijas

Just 150km and around 2 hours from Granada by car, Mijas is a picturesque white-washed village in the hills above the Costa del Sol, and honestly, it stole my heart!

Out of all the mountain villages in southern Spain, Mijas was one of my favorite – I took a day trip to Mijas but I wish I had more time to explore around.

When spending the day here, you can wander the charming, narrow streets, visit the small but beautiful Mijas Bullring, and take in panoramic views from the walls that once defended the town.

Mijas is known for its donkey taxis offer a unique way to explore and while the owners take care of them properly, it’s not for everyone.

The Church of Immaculate Conception, built on the site of an old mosque, is another must-visit. Mijas can be explored in a day, and you can easily see the best tourist attractions in town.

Setenil De Las Bodegas

Setenil de las Bodegas, around 170km and 2 hours from Granada by car, is famous for its houses built into rock overhangs above the Rio Trejo.

This unique village offers a distinctive experience compared to the typical Andalusian white towns. Key sights include the Castle of Setenil and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

Walking through its narrow streets, you’ll find shops and cafes that are literally part of the landscape. A day trip is sufficient to explore the main highlights and enjoy some local cuisine. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for some uneven paths!

Setenil is often added in a trip to Ronda as they’re only 20 minutes by car from each other, so you can consider that too.

Jaen

Jaen, just 95km and about an hour from Granada by car, bus, or train, is often overlooked but offers rich cultural and historical experiences.

The Jaen Cathedral is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture. Visit the Arab Baths, among the largest and best-preserved in Spain. The Castillo de Santa Catalina provides not only a historical perspective but also panoramic views of the olive-covered landscape Jaen is famous for.

The Ibero Museum is another must-visit for history enthusiasts. Jaen can be comfortably explored in a day, making it an easy and rewarding day trip from Granada.

When having lunch, make sure to indulge in local olive oil, as Jaen is known as the world’s olive oil capital!

This time, taking the bus is more convenient than the train.

You’ll find buses leaving regularly from Granada Station to Jaen, and it takes just over an hour. The first bus is at 7 AM and costs 10.18€ per person. The last direct bus leaves from Jaen at 7 PM and you’ll be back in Granada at 8 PM, right on time for dinner.

There are currently no direct trains from Granada to Jaen and back, and you have to get 2 connections to get there. Plus, the only trains leave in the evening, which isn’t convenient either.
